About Us

The Skagit Valley Herald Newspaper in Education (NIE) program is a resource for teachers, students, and parents interested in learning about newspapers and ways they can be used as a teaching text.

The program is managed by Eileen Woods, a former teacher who often used the newspaper in her own classroom. As a teacher, Eileen found the newspaper to be an excellent tool for capturing and holding student interest. She also learned that the newspaper can be used in teaching any subject to almost any grade level.

Research today confirms what Eileen already knew from years of teaching experience: Classroom newspaper use increases test scores! This is because students who use the newspaper as a source of informational text are also reading about things that capture their interest. This engagement is reflected in students’ ability to comprehend and make use of what they are reading.

Eileen delights in visiting classrooms, creating and sharing newspaper curricula, and hosting student tours. She also teaches “Newspaper Use Across the Curriculum” through Northwest ESD 189.

Please call Eileen to learn more about ways the Newspaper in Education program can help meet your needs! Her number is 360 416-2182 or e-mail nie@skagitvalleyherald.com.
