Each of these packets contains numerous hands-on activities for use with your classroom newspapers. Each activity can be directly related to the grade level expectations. There is no charge for these materials.

Geographic Challenge: Through advertising, sports, weather, comics, and front page news, students get a taste of the excitement of basic geography and the importance of geographic literacy in our daily lives. (Grades 3-12)

Speaking of Language: A general guide to using the newspaper in ESL, this publication contains several sections including Structure, Speaking, Listening, Comprehension, Writing, Reading, Culture, and Vocabulary. (ESL, Grade 4-adult)

News AD Vantage: Contents focus on basic elements of advertisements, analysis of advertisements, consumerism, career education, social studies, and language arts. Each activity informs students about newspaper advertising and directs the students to apply each concept with the newspaper. (Grades 4-8)

Newspaper Journalism: From basic newswriting to creation of summaries, comic strips, and advertising, these activities provide the background students need to develop high standards for classroom and school newspapers. Many activities are useful in the language arts classroom, (i.e. punctuation, capitalization) even if the group is not producing a newspaper. (Grades 6-12)

Character Education Through the News: This guide, formerly titled "Building Citizenship," is packed with activities that encourage students to think about the qualities needed to become a responsible citizen by exploring the strengths and foibles of people in the news. (Grades 5-12)

Skill Building with the Newspaper: The exercises in this curriculum guide promote use of the newspaper within student groups. Four competency groupings allow the teacher to meet students' needs at a variety of levels in teaching language arts, social studies, math, health, and life skills. (Grades 3-12)

Newspapers: Touching the Kaleidoscope of Your Mind (Activities for Multiple Intelligences): Activities are divided into multiple intelligence sections, but all involve more than one intelligence. While exploring the newspaper, students develop skills and organize information into patterns meaningful for the individual learner. (Grades 3-12)

It's NIE for K-3: (Note: Activities in this packet are also good for grades 4 and 5. Don't let the title deceive you!) Sixty full page activities for language arts, writing, science/health, math, news knowledge and social studies.

Reading Realities: Students use these activities in development of reading skills, skimming, distinguishing fact from opinion, finding the main idea, interpreting, and analyzing editorials. (Grades 4-12)

And Time Marches On...: Seventy-nine activities to help students connect with current events coverage, both locally and throughout the world. (Grades 4-12)

Life Skills in the News: Activities to help develop and apply practical living and consumer skills through the use of the newspaper. Four sections (Life Essentials, Language and Communication, Lifestyles, and Success) provide comprehensive applications for development of consumer skills. (Grades 6-12)

Mathematics and the News: Practical math activities to help students apply skills in simple calculation, averaging, converting numbers, estimation, problem-solving, computing with fractions and decimals, and more. Includes simple geometry, measurement, ratios, and other activities using advertising, financial news, sports, weather, and even the comics! (Grades 4-12)

Science in the News: Provides activities in earth science, health/nutrition, environment, careers, technology, and general science. Students will discover that science is an integral part of their daily lives and their daily newspaper. (Grades 5-12)

A Plan for All Seasons: This collection of newspaper activities is especially useful for times when students need to stay on task despite the distractions of various seasons and their holidays. (Grades 3-8; can be modified for first and second graders.)
