NIE Program Receives Awards

The Skagit Valley Herald Newspaper in Education (NIE) program was recently honored with three awards for My Washington State Newspaper Notebook, a collection of lessons for fourth grade students created by Educational Services Coordinator Eileen Woods with graphics by Erika Lint.

The awards are as follows:

First Place, National Newspaper Association (NNA), Educational Support category.
First Place, Western States Region, Best Curriculum category
Second Place, Newspaper Association of America (NAA), Original Curriculum for newspapers with circulation under 200,000.

Over 3,000 fourth grade students in Skagit County, Oak Harbor, and Stanwood benefited from receiving My Washington State Newspaper Notebook during the 2005-2006 school year. Used in conjunction with content of the Skagit Valley Herald, the Notebooks helped students learn about our state while also following directions and using terminology of the type used in WASL preparation. The Notebooks have been re-printed for use in the upcoming school year.
